I’ve been reading a lot about Christian Bale’s visit to Aurora. There are a lot of people praising him for going and calling him a hero as well as a lot of people saying he is not a hero, or worse he is taking attention away from the real heroes in this tragedy or that it was a publicity stunt.
I think he would be the last person to call himself a hero. He didn’t do it for publicity or recognition. He went to pay his respect to the families and friends of those people slain in the attack. He went to thank the doctors and police for their service and good work. And most importantly, he went to give comfort to the victims.
Does his actions make him a hero. No, that’s a term too easily thrown out because we can’t think of more appropriate terms. What he was, and what I think he would appreciate more is being called a decent human being. He did it because it was the right thing to do. I think we have become so cynical about people’s motives that we forget some do things just because it is the right thing to do.
To the haters, I have to ask what have you done other than accuse a man of making the visit for selfish motives? Have you visited them? Have you donated money to help them?
The real heroes, and I think Christian Bale would agree were the young men whose first thought was to put themselves between the gunman and the ones they loved. They did it because they had the courage to do the right thing. Ask yourself before criticize someone if you would have the same courage to instantly react that way.

^ This is the most apt description I have seen of this. Bravo
